When I reflect on Family Focus and its values, two words come to mind: community and service. These are values that are deeply ingrained within me, as well as values that draw me to Family Focus credit union. The first value of community is illustrated through the foundation of Family Focus credit union. The credit union began as a way to help those in the community with needs, and that is still evident in the credit union today through their dedicated support and helpful advice. I try to mimic this personable support as a Resident Assistant at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I do this by getting to know each of my residents early in the year. This allows me to build relationships with them, which helps to form a strong community on my floor. These relationships also give me the opportunity to provide each of my residents with resources and advice that is specific to them. This makes the advice valuable because it is different from the advice that they are used to receiving as freshmen of a large university. Another way that I promote community is through volunteering at the food pantry on campus. This pantry is exclusively for students of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and provides those in need with resources and meals. I help by packing orders, handing out orders, and providing information on the other resources in the community. Over the years, I have become familiar with the individuals that come to the pantry, which has allowed me to customize their orders and connect them with additional resources. Just like Family Focus, I believe that everyone has a right to financial freedom. This fuels me to continue to volunteer and educate myself on the different ways for others to achieve this goal. Lastly, Family Focus and its values have already helped me to develop into a better version of myself. This is due to the support and education it has provided me when it comes to my finances. This support will help to fund my journey through undergraduate and physician assistant schooling. Once I am a physician assistant, I will not forget the values of community and service that are ingrained within me and Family Focus.

The credit union’s emphasis on family and community support mirrors my own values perfectly. The focus on families and prioritizing our community while helping others cultivates belonging and trust within our community, and I value empathy, trust, belonging, and my community. Serving as Cass County Queen of 2023, I got to see a glimpse of the impact that anyone can make in our community with a voice. I had the opportunity to visit nursing homes, the sheriff’s office, reading books to classes in school, and so much more. The credit union movement mirrors my values as a student, a person, and a community member. I feel that I am an empathetic and compassionate person, and when I think about financial stability, not only for my own family, but other struggling families, it motivates me to want a positive change in our community. As a counselor, and a community member, I want to be an empathetic, active listener, and support children and families in every way that I can. Being a part of the family focus movement drives me to foster new relationships with the people around me and our community. This scholarship can help me connect with the community and embody the values while being dedicated to make a difference. This will allow me to be a source of support to my community and others, and grow personally. Overall, family focus can guide me in my journey of being the person I have always wanted to be, and fulfill my career dreams as a pediatric counselor.
